The Fighter: The Struggle of Men and Women in the City
with film writer, Nick Parker, PhD
Hollywood blockbuster and multiple Oscar winner The Fighter seems like a fairly simple story of a struggling working-class hero trying to break from his roots and reach the boxing big time. Unlike many other films of the genre though, The Fighter depicts a number of strong female characters, who profoundly affect the central hero-figure Micky (Mark Wahlberg). We will talk about the ways that urban cinema depicts men and women, and the heroism in both.

On a scorching day in the city, working stiff William "D-Fens" Foster (Michael Douglas) breaks down and deserts his car on the freeway to begin Joel Schumacher's 1993 film Falling Down. The rest of the day takes us with Foster on an increasingly wild journey across LA. As he passes through different parts of the city, we discover both the friction between different communities living in close proximity, and the antagonism that drives Foster himself. We'll talk about whether Foster is ultimately more hero or villain.
