Lynn Massachusetts is now the largest city in Essex County and was first settled by colonists from the New England Company in Salem. Lynn's economy was first established in farming and shell fishing but by 1837 the city was a major shoe manufacturer.
The Civil War brought great prosperity to Lynn and with it further growth of more shoe factories. The fires of 1869 and 1889 that destroyed a lot of the central business district from Central Square to Broad Street did not stop the expansion. Burned out buildings were simply transformed into five and six story shoe factories.
Stately summer homes were built along its shore by the mid 19th century and established the city as a fashionable resort area. When Lynn Shore Drive was opened in 1910, it increased the development of high rises to take advantage of the shore view.
Lynn is now an urban manufacturing and commercial center that is densely populated and culturally diverse. Residents of Lynn are very proud of the city's long history which parallels the history of New England as a whole.
